Thank you @stlsciencecenter and Smithsonian/@sitesexhibitions for granting Kuiper special permission to visit Destination Moon in St. Louis. The exhibit is now on display at @museumofflight in Seattle through September 2, 2019. After that, it will be heading to Cincinnati!
Today is the 50th anniversary of ‘Space Oddity’ by David Bowie. 5 days after release, Apollo 11 would launch. 9 days after release, the first human beings would land on the Moon.
According to Bowie in 2003, “[The song] was picked up by the British television, and used as the background music for the landing itself. I’m sure they really weren’t listening to the lyric at all (laughs). It wasn’t a pleasant thing to juxtapose against a moon landing. Of course, I was overjoyed that they did. Obviously, some BBC official said, ‘Oh, right then, that space song, Major Tom, blah blah blah, that’ll be great.’ ‘Um, but he gets stranded in space, sir.’ Nobody had the heart to tell the producer that.” Oops. ?
We’ll be covering Apollo 8, 9 and 10 in the next few days, and then “livegramming” the Apollo 11 mission in real time from launch to splashdown (and beyond.)
I’ve been waiting nearly a year to share most of these photos and I’m very excited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing with you. Are you excited?? What are you doing to celebrate?
